Lord Krishna’s desire to appear in this form as Lord Jagannath, Baladev and Subhadra.

King  Indradyumna was a great disciple of Lord Krishna. A Brahmin had took appointment and informed him about holy place “Purushottam Kshetra”, where  Lord Krishna was worshipped as well-known “Nilamadava”.

The King was overjoyed and agree with the humble brahmin called Vidyapathi. He was allotted the responsibility to explore the place. Vidyapati was awfully excited and delighted. He was not hungry and thirsty during the long journey.

In this journey, Vidyapati met a villager named Viswabasu, who was returning home after worshipping Nilamadhav. After nice conversations, Viswabasu invited Vidyapati home to offer him some food ( Prasad). However, Vidyapati was reluctant to take anything before he saw Lord  “The Nilamadhava”.

At earliest, Viswabasu was quite doubtful to show Vidyapati, but ultimately he agreed. He had guided Vidyapati into a dark jungle towards the peak of a mountain. After a night’s walk, they had reached “Nilachal Dham” in the first light. The charming holiness of Nilamadhav had made Vidyapati delight and was thankful to be fortunate to have a ‘Darshan’.

Afterward, they came back to the home of Viswabasu. Vidypati was politely presented varieties of food (Prashad). He was very amazed to see the various exotic dishes.

Vidyapati had told Viswabasu about the King Indradyumna’s wish to build a outstanding temple for Lord Nilamadhav. Then, he had returned back to the kingdom.

The priest Vidyapati had told King Indradyumna about his travels and presented the sacred Prasad of Nilamadhav and a fresh lovely flower garland.  The king had started praying to the Lord, immediately after getting it. Narada muni the dearest disciple of Lord Vishnu arrived there. Narada Muni was very pleased. The king had asked Narada Muni to advice. How he can build the most excellent temple for Lord Nilamadhav.

On an promising day, King Indradyumna with several others had started the journey to the beautiful Place of  Nilamadhav Dham.                                                After reaching there, they were surprised to witness that the divinity had vanished. Instead of the God, there was a heap of golden sand. The king became very upset. Suddenly they heard a daydream voice from the heavens. It was informing them that the king would get the Lord’s ‘Darshan’, but in a special form.

Narada Muni had instructed the king to complete 1000 holy gatherings and invite Gods with vibration of “Mantra” by priests and to perform the sacred ritual.  And he should build a magnificent temple for the Lord. It became clear to King Indradyumna that the Lord would appear in the form of a Dardu (sacred log) from the ocean. When the blessed log appeared, it had the marks of the chakra, conchs, lotus and club which were the divine signs of the Lord. Then the question was before the king that who would carve the deities.

Many of the best carpenters were invited to attempt to carve the Gods. But, whenever they would start, all their tools would break. Worriedly, the King began to pray for a solution. He then heard the day dream voice again. He was notified that an old poor carpenter would come to carve the deities and once this special carpenter arrived at the palace.

The old carpenter appeared before king and he then assured “the Deities will be carved in a total of 21 days, but, he has one condition. He will carve the deities in a locked room and no one should disturb him. If disturb by any one, he disappear”.

So, the old carpenter had began his work. Throughout the palace, everyday, one could hear the ‘tik tik tik’ of the chisel and hammer. However, on the 14th day, silence descended on the palace. The king and queen became more and more anxious with every passing silent moment. They were convincing that the old man’s health had taken a toll on his work and something awful had happened. Then the King had tried to listen through the door. And then he had tried to open the door. As the door move ‘to and fro’ the old man had disappeared.

Inside the room, there remained thee deities, with no hands and feet. Instantly, King Indradyumna had regretted his sudden increase decision. At that moment, Narada muni appeared and comforted the king. He exposed that it was Lord Krishna’s desire to appear in this form as Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra.
